The village of Fontana-on-Geneva Lake is situated on the western shore of Geneva Lake and encompasses 3.5 square miles. It has a population of 4,965 people and is known for its picturesque setting and is a popular vacation spot, with many summer homes and resorts. Amenities include a public beach, marina, and parks.
 
Formerly a village occupied by the Potawatomi Indian tribe, this is where Geneva Lake, known earlier as Big Foot Lake, was first seen by early explorers in 1831. Fontana was home to Glenwood Springs, the first planned community development on Geneva Lake in 1892 and was said to have three mineral springs with special medicinal benefits. This was a popular area on the lake, with all boats stopping in Fontana and with the close proximity to the Williams Bay train depot, that brought travelers to the area on the Northwestern Railway. This was also the location of a trailhead that led travelers all the way to and from Chicago.
 
Today, the Village of Fontana is home to the Big Foot Country Club, The Abbey Resort & Avant Spa, Abbey Springs, Chuck’s, and Gordy’s restaurant and marina. In the winter, it is where you will see the Ice Boats staging before gliding on the frozen lake. Fontana is a robust community with many restaurants and bars, and a great spot for boating, fishing, swimming, and more.
